Monitoring and Targeting

Monitoring and Targeting

Developing feasible energy plans

Energy efficiency goals and carbon reduction plans must be realistic if they are to succeed.

Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) is an energy management tool. It can be defined as an activity which uses energy consumption as a basis of controlling and managing consumption downward and combines the principles of thermodynamics and statistics. The two activities of monitoring and target setting are distinctly separate.

Monitoring is concerned with maintaining an existing pattern of energy performance and identifying any deviations quickly so that corrective action may be taken.

Targeting is about setting realistic targets for energy performance based on real historical performance data.

The implementation of an M&T system should be carried out in stages and with a firm view on the objective for the business. In the first instance, the establishment of a metering and monitoring system covering simply the main primary energy sources to a site should be put in place. The next stage is to understand how the energy on-site is distributed between areas, business units or value streams giving responsible individuals information about their department’s energy performance.

Once the management system is in place and established a site may wish to progress to monitor energy consumption on more disaggregated basis such as for individual lines or processes within an area and subsequently down to individual equipment items.

A monitoring and targeting system is only of use if the information is presented and used by the appropriate operations teams to control energy consumption. At Ameresco, our experts can help by guiding organisations through the process of implementing a suitable energy monitoring and targeting management system which is relevant to the operation. We can implement metering solutions and offer a real-time cloud based energy management interface which can be configured to give visibility on energy performance at all levels of a business and also provide our energy analysts and engineers with data to identify and deliver further energy savings in a full partnership approach.

Control: Use real-time data to modify operational behaviour and system control strategies with zero or limited capital outlay.

Replace: Identify and model equipment and system performance and the related energy savings that will result from replacement of inefficient or poorly performing equipment.

Shift to clean, alternative and renewable energy sources that can provide significant cost savings or carbon emission reductions compared with current energy supplies. Advances in renewable-energy and alternative-fuel technologies can help government organizations lower operating costs, manufacturers lower production expenses and any organization meet carbon emissions goals.
